Hoping to squeeze more entertainment value out of the world's most popular sea sponge, Nickelodeon Home Entertainment will release SpongeBob SquarePants: The First 100 Episodes DVD set ($99.98 ) on Sept. 22.A ratings powerhouse for the Nickelodeon network since its 1999 debut, SpongeBob remains a cultural and marketing icon extending well beyond kids. A fresh episode April 17 featuring Johnny Depp scored 5.8 million viewers, cable TV's No. 2-ranked show for the week.
Nickelodeon is billing the DVD set as the first SpongeBob collector's edition. It has more than 36 hours of episodes and bonus features, including commentary from Tom Kenny, the voice behind the pineapple-dwelling fry cook from Bikini Bottom.
"What's been so cool for me is how this character resonates with people and has become part of pop culture," says Kenny, 46. "It's been a surreal experience a lot of actors don't get to have."
